Equatorial Guinea: An opposition leader sentenced to six months in prison for "serious insults on the ruling party"

On Thursday, May 11, Gabriel Nse Obiang Obono, an opposition leader in Equatorial Guinea, was sentenced to six months in prison for "serious insults" to President Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo's party. The latter has been in power for 37 years.
A court in the capital Malabo on Thursday (May 11th) acknowledged the opponent Gabriel Nse Obiang Obono, leader of the opposition party Citizens for Innovation (CI), "guilty of the offense of gross insults" to the Democratic Party of Equatorial Guinea (PDGE) .
Having returned from 13 years of exile in 2014, this former Lieutenant-Colonel had already been prevented from running for the presidential election in April 2016 because he had not lived five consecutive years in the country.
President Obiang was then re-elected with 93.7% of the vote on 24 April 2016. He has been in power since August 1979, a record in Africa.Prohibited from engaging in political activity
Gabriel Nse Obiang Obono was also condemned to compensate the PDGE with 50 million CFA francs (76,000 euros) for damages and must pay 200,000 CFA francs to the State. The opponent was also prohibited from engaging in political activity for an indefinite period.
