Cameroon – Teachers strike: Another strike announced for November 25, 2016

In its November 22, 2016 edition, the daily newspaper Le Jour reports that another teacher strike is on the horizon. For, according to the newspaper, six unions denounce the dilatory and manipulation of the Prime Minister who created a committee to deal with the issues already debated in 2012.

“Are we going back to the type of disengagement that teachers organized in the 1990s? We must fear, with regard to the current mobilization, “writes Le Jour. For, it must be said that while the contractual teachers shunned the competitive exams organized to integrate 500 of them by the Minister of Civil Service, the six unions spoken, dated 17 November last, issued a notice of strike to Philemon Yang, the Head of Government. “If no concrete measures are taken and officially announced by the Government“, the trade unions threaten to call on 25 November 2016 “all teachers” to strike.

The newspaper said that in their letter, Jean Pierre Ateba, Kouanang, Thobie Emmanuel Mbassi, Roger Kaffo Fokou, Maurice Angel Phouet Foe and Michel Serge Tamo signed the correspondence respectively for Snieb, Snuipen, Fecase, Snaes, The Snaef and the Oneeps criticized the Prime Minister (PM) Philemon Yang for having created by an Order No. 118/Cab/Pm an “ad hoc committee to examine the demands of teachers“, even though in 2012, a similar committee was set up, comprising seven members of the government and seven representatives of the “francophone and anglophone” teachers’ unions.

At the time, the work of this committee was piloted by Grégoire Owona the Minister of Labor and Social Security. The unions therefore want the PM to urgently implement the resolutions of the ad hoc committee in 2012, pending the convening of the forum that will focus on the other issues.
